Mark Fields, the CEO of Ford Motor Company, just released a large post on how Ford plans to mass produce autonomous cars. This is huge. Like, Back To The Future huge!
Anyone familiar with the book Built to Last will know that great companies set BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) in alignment with their vision and values. Ford just followed the fact that they are a visionary company in the book and announced a gigantic goal of mass producing driverless cars that aim to revolutionize the way people drive, like the automotive assembly line did for the original Model T.
We can learn 3 things from this announcement that will help us small business owners set BHAGs that are consistent with our business goals and our capabilities.
- Set Goals According To Our Abilities – Ford is not announcing this 10 years ago when autonomous cars were just a theoretical possibility. After a convoy of driverless trucks navigated Europe’s highway system, this is no longer a theory. It is a practical reality. Driverless cars are now a practical possibility. Although advancements in the technology still need to be made, Ford is able to reliably make a commitment to mass produce them. For small businesses, what are you already doing well that you can kick up a notch to set a great goal?
- Set Goals That Require Proactive Change – In the post, Mark Fields discusses how car businesses thought that the change to driverless cars was going to incremental, but Ford has committed to a complete engineering challenge to change the way we do cars. You like Uber, try Uber automatic. For small businesses, this means we need to set goals that will provide significant results in our business. For example, my goal this month was to increase my private clients by $1,000 a month.
- Set Goals That Make The News – Committing to mass produce driverless cars is a worthy of a news story. Small businesses who can set goals that are worthy of news stories will get more leads and PR from just setting the goal. A win-win!
